The soft rustling of a spooked deer in the shadows, the crickets in the meadow, the song of the whip-poor-will, anyone who ventures into the forest after dark knows it becomes a different place at night. Much like the sound of vocalist, Ambyr, of the group Ambyr Effect, whose music is reminiscent of a cool evening breeze on a gravel road. It is melancholy and a little dangerous, but tinged with the sweet scent of honeysuckle.
"Billy Block once called my music, ‘Gothic Country’. Another description I hear is, 'If Evanescence made a country album'. Many of my songs are in minor keys with haunting melodies that either my husband, Glenn, writes or we write together." Ambyr explains. "I do seem to be gravitating more towards rock these days and my second album will be a little harder, heavier and darker."
With the added weight being woven into her tune, she has begun looking for shoulders to bear it, though many who have heard her know its no burden, but a delight. "I’m currently rebuilding my band, Ambyr Effect. Once I get the right players in place, I’ll be heading in to the studio to record a second album. Also, you can find me singing many of the background vocals on Chance’s new album, The Story Teller. He also featured me on two of the songs on the album, “Pauline”, which he wrote about his mother, and “Lovers Lullabye”. Needless to say, I’m very proud and honored to be a part of his project."
The inception of her recorded career began with the album, 'One Heart', which she co-produced, featuring many of her original songs. She's opened for the performances of big names such as Ronnie Milsap and Big and Rich, and was featured at the Apollo.. With a voice that is literally unheard of amongst today's music, she is destined to make a mark.
"So many great artists have certainly influenced me, but I’ve never tried to copy anyone. I’m constantly being told how unique my style is, vocally and musically, but that’s for someone else to decide." Ambyr explains, and 'unique' describes everything about this dark-haired diva. "I’m also left-handed, so I have a left-handed guitar that I’m learning to play. It’s tough though, everything’s upside down and backwards."
She claims to have come into the world in the usual way, however, amidst the steamy humidity of Jacksonville, Florida . "I had a fairly normal childhood. I'm the oldest of three children, with two younger brothers. I guess I was five years old when I started singing solos in church, sang through high school in chorus and musicals, and was classically trained in opera. My family has always been supportive. I’m married to my best friend, Glenn and we have a wonderful 8-year-old son, Joshua. Other than my family, music is my all-consuming passion."
"For me, it’s simply not a choice. Anyone who has ever performed in front of large crowds knows that it’s like an addiction. If I don’t have any shows scheduled for too long a period of time, I go through withdrawals." she says with a laugh. "I want to be happy and successful in whatever I’m doing. Right now, I’m pursuing my dreams of having a career in music. If it turns out the way I hope and that dream comes true, great. I’m grateful now for simply having the ability to be able to pursue my dreams. Not everyone gets that opportunity."
